I acknowledge that the land on which this soil invasives website was created, and from which insights and curated resources on www.stopjumpingworms.ca are shared, is the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. It is also home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. I also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit. I further recognize the Lūnaapéewak (Lenape) people, whose ancestral connection to the lands now known as the Mid-Atlantic and Southwestern Ontario are also deeply intertwined with the history of the GTA .
On the purpose of this website: This is an independent citizen-led platform that functions as a knowledge mobilization tool and a responsive call-to-action intended to encourage proactive soil stewardship and prevention practices.
This work is for anyone and everyone concerned by invasive soil species. It is also offered in support of Indigenous sovereignty, biosovereignty and Indigenous-led land stewardship. I believe that jumping worms must not be an inevitability but can be mitigated and in many cases stopped through protocols that are easy, inexpensive and familiar to both industry and to those with duties of stewardship. I hope to contribute to discussions that emphasize prevention and practical mitigation strategies and to all discussions that diverge from an attitude of inevitability regarding the visible "march north" of jumping worms AKA "Snake Worms" and their accompanying ecological harm as shown on maps such as iNaturalist app. This is an independent citizen-led initiative and the information shared on the website is knowledge mobilization and mitigation best practices.
